Julie reached out again, this time via Facebook, with a message that read:

“Hey! Just checking in. Hope everything is going well for you 😊”

Let’s unpack this.

“Just checking in” is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. After eighteen months of silence, this phrase arrives with no context, no acknowledgment of the gap, and a suspiciously breezy emoji.

The phrase itself is weaponised ambiguity. It sounds light, casual, even kind — but it demands an emotional response without earning one. The recipient is expected to reply warmly, to fill the silence, to reward the reach-out. The sender risks nothing. The receiver risks everything.

A response like “I’m fine, thanks! How are you?” would be a capitulation. A non-response invites the follow-up (“Did you see my message?”). The only honest reply is this post.

Verdict: Neutral in tone, corrosive in function. 2/10, would not recommend.
